CALL TO ACTION: International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Friday 25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women as declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. It is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent, and devastating human rights violations in our world today and remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma, and shame surrounding it.
The Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women issued by the UN General Assembly, defines violence against women as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.”
In general terms, it manifests itself in physical, sexual, and psychological forms, encompassing:
1. Intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide);
2. Sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber-harassment);
3. Human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation);
female genital mutilation; and
child marriage.
Violence negatively affects women’s general well-being and prevents women from fully participating in society. It impacts their families, their community, and the country at large. It has tremendous costs, from greater strains on health care to legal expenses and losses in productivity.
This year, the UN marks 16 Days under the theme “UNiTE! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls”. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
