Plastic is one of the most persistent pollutants on Earth. It's made to last - and it does, often for 400 years or more.Plastic pollution can afflict land, waterways and oceans. It is estimated that 1.1 to 8.8 million metric tons (MT) of plastic waste enters the ocean from coastal communities each year.
As of 2018, about 380 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide each year. From the 1950s up to 2018, an estimated 6.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced worldwide. Alarmingly, at least 8 million tonnes of discarded plastic also enters our oceans each year, and plastic pollution at sea is on course to double by 2030.
Pakistan is fighting a rising tide of plastic waste, including an estimated 55 billion plastic bags each year. The capital, Islamabad, is trying to cut down on pervasive plastic pollution by implementing a ban on single-use bags. But other Pakistani districts have had little success in enforcing similar measures. in Pakistan, each year, 30 million tons of solid waste is produced, out of which nine percent are plastics.
Northern Citizen Community Board, International Human Rights Commission & United Nations Association of Pakistan are taking initiative to practice a take-back policy for used PET bottles with its major sponsor IGLOO ICE CREAM who will offer ONE RUPEE FOR ONE PETT BOTTLE encouraging everyone to collect used PETT Bottles & get ONE RUPEE from IGLOO. IGLOO is also working with us on different Climate related Projects. Collected PETT bottles will be handed over to the companies specialized in crushing without asking them to Pay Us. We are planning to have 05 Collecting Camps every week for Two Days in Five different locations of Karachi starting from December 21 & 22 2019 as follows;
1. SADDAR AREA
2. TARIQ ROAD AREA
3. DEFENCE NEAR THREE SWORDS
4. NAZIMABAD NEAR HAIDERI
5. KORANGI RESIDENTIAL AREA
A video shared on social media by a member of The Litterboom Project, a South African conservation initiative, showed a slurry of plastic waste being churned out onto a Durban beach by the waves.
